“In their quest to “pull social studies off the back burner,” teachers have begun to bring together the various elementary school subjects to create interesting and challenging learning opportunities. Therefore, they might choose to combine history with the literacy program by having children read and write biographies and historical fiction” (Maxim, 2009). I believe that incorporating the different subjects into a social studies/history unit allows a fuller understanding of the topic being covered. For example, one teacher mentioned in Maxim (2009) discussed the talking calendar. To incorporate Language Arts, each month the calendar had a different culture as the theme, using their language for the days of the week. To learn mathematics, they used number correlation. One example was with Roman Numerals; how to write the number in the language, how that number connects to the culture’s information and its representation. I believe this is an important and authentic integration because it has a cultural connection and applicable use in real everyday experiences. An inauthentic integration would not allow the student to interact with the materials they are learning about. When you feel no connection, and there are no applicable real life experiences, students will have difficulty connecting them and integrating different subjects. According to Maxim (2009), “integrated learning is designed to break down the barriers among school subjects in an attempt to make learning more substantial for students.”
