Nutrition is essential to proper growth and development. While the process itself is completely individualized, diet is an important thing to consider early in life, from the earliest stages of pregnancy through early childhood and adolescence and its affect on development plays a major role. In our classroom text, Dennis and Bee make note, "Both the general adequacy of a pregnant woman's diet, measured in terms of calories, and the presence of certain key nutrients are critical to the prenatal development," (Bee & Boyd, p. 57, 2007). The Developing Child (2007) also notes the major role nutrition plays in the proper development of a child. It is important to consider this during pregnancy, because lack of nutrition could cause a stillbirth or infant death in the first year. "Autopsies show that infants born to malnourished mothers have smaller brains, with fewer and smaller brain cells than normal," (Bee & Boyd, p. 57, 2007). While reading the text I was fascinated with how much this plays on our body. It makes sense, however, when reading the data which backs up this testimony, I could only come to consider the ramifications of poor nutrition. Maintaining a healthy diet is important to the health of an individual. "The Nutritional needs of infancy, childhood, and adolescence are no less important. During infancy, adolescence, and puberty is when when various developmental changes occur. With improper amounts or ubalanced combinations of nutrients during this period of 16 years, there may be disturbances in many different part of the body" (Peckos, p.274, 1957). Poor nutrition can directly have an variety of affects on various body parts such as the brain, arms, legs, mouth and skin. A proper nutritional diet is important to developing babies and adolesents.
