Due to the proximity to Ellis Island, a study of immigration and tracking the different cultures that entered the local community, changing such things as housing, businesses, and traditions within the town. A field trip to Ellis Island could also take place. The location of this town is prime for allowing access to so many different aspects of historical study and social studies curriculum. Also, connecting international holidays based on the students cultures within the classroom would also be a good way to connect the world community into the mix. One thing I currently do within my classroom is celebrate the international holidays recognized through the world. By learning about the people around us, it makes us more knowledgeable into different cultures traditions, allowing us to understand one another better. I believe the connection of the local town is important for students to understand why and how they ended up in this region and how their town developed to what it is today.
The community I currently work in is Hoboken, NJ. In New Jersey, Hoboken's connection and history are a critical part of the history of the state in terms of shipping and receiving. Prior to its current state, Hoboken and its connection to the Hudson river, in addition to its proximity to Manhattan allowed it to act a variety of ways. First off, in social studies, a study of transportation could occur. Hoboken originated with boats and trains, then implementing trolleys until the popularity of cars. Trips to local businesses such as the Historical Museum would allow an interactive connection to the past.
